TEHRAN (Tasnim) – In a high-profile ceremony in Baku on Sunday, senior officials from Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan signed six Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements to promote mutual cooperation in a range of fields.

The ceremony was attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev. Cabinet ministers and senior officials from the two neighboring countries signed the documents.

One of the agreements on cooperation in the field of quality standards was signed between Iran’s Institute of Standards and Industrial Research and Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Economy and Industry.

Central banks of the two countries also signed an MoU.

The other agreements include a document on cooperation in tourism industry, one on cyber collaboration and another on plant protection and quarantine.

The transportation ministers of the two countries also inked a protocol on mutual efforts for establishing the north-south corridor.

The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) is a multipurpose route for the transit of goods between Iran, Russia, Europe, India and Central Asia via shipping lines, railroad and land routes.

President Rouhani arrived in Baku on Sunday morning to attend a trilateral meeting with his Russian and Azeri counterparts.

Iran and Azerbaijan have accelerated efforts in recent years to forge closer partnership in various fields, from fighting against terrorism to the exchange of electricity and gas deals.
