Syrian Army Retakes Air Defense Base from Terrorists near Deraa

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian army troops managed to recapture an air defense base from foreign-backed terrorists near the southwestern city of Deraa.

The army forces retook the air defense base between the towns of Abtaa and Da'el on the northern outskirts of Deraa, the Arabic-language al-Ahed news website reported on Friday.

The base, with an area of 10 square kilometers, is adjacent to the main road connecting Deraa to Damascus, according to the report.

Syrian Army troops backed by allied forces have made major advances against foreign-backed terrorist groups in the country in the past few months.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
