FM: Algeria Can Be Iran’s Gateway to Africa

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Algeria’s Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra said his country can play the role of Iran’s gateway to the African continent.

Algeria is determined to enhance brotherly ties with Iran, Lamamra said in a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, on the sidelines of the 17th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Venezuela on Saturday.

He also said Tehran-Algiers cooperation will not only fulfill the interests of the two nations, but also serve the region.

The Iranian president, for his part, called for accelerated economic interaction between the two countries following the termination of cruel anti-Iran sanctions under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear agreement between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

President Rouhani also stressed the need for collective efforts to stabilize the oil market and ensure fair international prices.

Leaders and diplomatic delegations from 120 countries have attended the NAM summit on Venezuela’s Margarita Island.

NAM members make up about two-thirds of the UN members.
