Iranian Official Urges Ever-Growing Ties with Russia

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, called for efforts to constantly promote Tehran-Moscow relations, especially given the current regional and international developments.

Under the new regional and international circumstances, Iran-Russia relationship needs to grow constantly, Velayati said at a meeting with Russian president’s special envoy for Syria, held in Tehran on Saturday.

Alluding to the abortive attempts to upset Tehran-Moscow ties, the former Iranian foreign minister called for efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and address threats with an eye to the delicate situation in West Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East in the future.

For his part, the Russian envoy hailed the good interaction between the two countries, noting that enemies of Iran and Russia have been attempting, all in vain, to ruin the bilateral relations.

Iran and Russia have formed a strong alliance in recent years, with both supporting the Syrian government against foreign-backed militancy.

Tehran and Moscow insist that the Syrian nation is the only side that has the right to shape the future of the Arab country, which has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
