Iran’s President: G5+1 Should Fully Meet Obligations to Sustain JCPOA
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani underlined that in order to sustain the July 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the parties should fully implement their obligations.
Speaking at a meeting with the Russian president’s special envoy on Middle East affairs, Alexander Lavrentiev, in Tehran on Saturday, President Rouhani said the JCPOA, which has been worked out by seven countries, is in line with international peace and security.
“All (parties) should make efforts to safeguard the achievements of the deal and we should not allow a country to undermine the agreement as it wishes,” he said, seemingly referring to a recent move by the US Congress to renew sanctions against Tehran for 10 more years.
“Iran has always remained and will continue to remain committed to its obligations,” Rouhani said, stresing that in order for the JCPOA to be long-lasting, members of the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) should live up to their commitments as well.
His comments came after the US Senate voted 99-0 to extend the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for another decade. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives nearly unanimously in November, and congressional aides said they expected Obama would sign it.
According to Iranian officials, the implementation of the legislation would be a clear breach of the JCPOA.
During the meeting, the Russian envoy briefed Rouhani on the latest developments in the region and cooperation between Tehran and Moscow in the fight against terrorism.
