IRGC Ground Force Boosting Airborne Unit: Commander

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Force Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour unveiled extensive plans for development of its newly-established airborne unit.

In an interview with Tasnim on Monday, Brigadier General Pakpour said the IRGC Ground Force is developing the fleet of helicopters and boosting the airborne bases across the country.

The airborne unit of the IRGC Ground Force was founded in 2016 at the discretion of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

Its fleet of helicopters includes mainly Shahed-285 combat choppers.

In April 2016, the IRGC Ground Force Airborne Unit took an active role in massive military exercises in southeast Iran, codenamed Payambar-e Azam (The Great Prophet).

During the large-scale war game, the Airborne Unit flew its Mil Mi-17 and Bell-208 helicopters in a heliborne operation to deploy combat forces to the rear of the hypothetical enemy’s front. The Cobra choppers also hit targets with rockets.
