US Attack on Syria to Escalate Crisis in Region: Iranian Speaker

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani lashed out at the US for attacking Syria under the pretext that the Damascus government has used chemical weapons, saying the move would only complicate the regional crisis triggered by Washington itself.

“This measure by Americans (attacking Syria) will definitely fan the flames of the crisis in the region that has been created with US involvement,” Larijani said in an address to an open session of the parliament on Sunday.

He took a swipe at the US administration for launching the attack on a Syrian airbase before any international organization investigated the claim that Damascus has launched chemical attacks on Idlib.

“The US must be asked why it did not let a fact-finding committee be formed” before taking military action against Syria, Larijani added.

He further emphasized that Syria has not been in possession of any nerve agent sarin, arguing also that the Damascus government did not need to lunch any chemical attack on the town of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib Province after its victories and military gains against the terrorist groups.

On Friday, the US launched the missile attack on the Syrian government’s Shayrat Airfield near Homs with 59 Tomahawk missiles. Officially announcing the strike, US President Donald Trump claimed that the targeted airfield had launched the chemical attack on the rebel-held area in Idlib.
