Iran’s Top General: US Attack on Syria Aimed at Boosting Terrorists’ Morale

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri condemned the US for its recent missile attack on a Syrian airbase, saying the move was an attempt to raise the spirits of terrorist groups in the Arab country.

“We regard this move as a flagrant aggression against a free and sovereign state and contrary to international law…,” Major General Baqeri said in a telephone conversation with Chief of the General Staff of the Syrian Arab Army General Ali Abdullah Ayoub on Sunday.

The commander further referred to the missile attack on the Syrian airfield near Homs as an attempt by the White House to expand its aggression and boost the morale of the terrorist groups in Syria.

He also pledged the Iranian armed forces’ support for the resistance of the Syrian nation, saying the Islamic Republic is confident that Syria will emerge victorious in the battle against the foreign-backed terrorists.

General Ayoub, for his part, thanked the Iranian nation and government for their support for the Syrian people and said Iran’s stance on the issue is logical and insightful and the main support for Syria in the face of the threats.

The US military attacked the Syrian government’s Shayrat Airfield near Homs with 59 Tomahawk missiles on Friday.

Officially announcing the strike, US President Donald Trump claimed that the targeted airfield had launched the chemical attack on the rebel-held area in Idlib.

On Thursday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said the country’s armed forces "did not and will not" use chemical weapons, even against extremist groups.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
