Iranian MPs Condemn US Missile Attack on Syrian Airbase

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Over 200 Iranian parliamentarians condemned the recent US missile attack on an air base in Syria, describing the offensive as an “illegitimate” move aimed at saving terrorists in the Arab country from more defeats.

In the statement released on Sunday, 228 Iranian lawmakers said the attack on the Syrian army’s airbase in the central province of Homs was a violation of the Arab country’s sovereignty, calling on the international community not to remain silent but condemn the assault.

“…this illegitimate move by the US is one way or another in line with attempts to back terrorists and boost their morale (following their successive defeats on the ground),” the Iranian MPs said.

Noting that the Syrian stockpile of chemical weapons was surrendered in a joint mission comprising representatives of the UN and OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) in 2014, the lawmakers said the attack also violated international laws and was an attempt to halt the Syrian nation and army’s ongoing achievements.

The US launched the missile attack on the Syrian government’s Shayrat Airfield near Homs with 59 Tomahawk missiles on Friday on the pretext that the Damascus government has launched a chemical attack on the town of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib Province.

Damascus has categorically denied the accusations leveled against it about being involved in the chemical attack.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (ISIL), controlling parts of it.
