Iranians in 103 Countries to Cast Votes in Presidential Election
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Islamic Republic’s 12th presidential election will be held in Iran and over 100 other countries later this month.
Iranian nationals in the country and those residing overseas will vote in the presidential polls on Friday, May 19.
Iranian expatriates can cast their votes in 286 ballot boxes in the Islamic Republic’s missions, including embassies and consulate generals, in 103 countries.
To cast their ballots, they need to carry with them a proof of their citizenship, including their passport, ID card or birth certificate.
Iranian foreign ministry made efforts so that Iranian expatriates in Canada can also vote in the polls but the Ottawa government has refused to allow setting up polling stations, citing technical issues, absence of political relations between the two countries, closure of Iranian diplomatic sites, and Canada’s domestic regulations on polls involving other countries’ citizens.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, meanwhile, has suggested that since there will be numerous polling stations in the US, Iranian expatriates living in Canada can refer to nearby cities in the US to vote in Iran’s presidential election.
