Rouhani Vows to Proceed with Resistance Economy in Second Term

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Incumbent Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who is running for the forthcoming presidential elections, highlighted the importance of Resistance Economy plan, saying that the country should resist against foreign pressures through the plan.

Speaking to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on Saturday night, Rouhani expounded on his administration’s performance over the past four years and said the country has managed to overcome economic problems created after drops in oil prices thanks to Resistance Economy.

The Resistance Economy means that the country’s economy becomes resistant against external shocks, he said, adding, “In fact, our economy must be such that it can withstand various kinds of pressures.”

Back in 2014, Ayatollah Khamenei had sent a proclamation to heads of Iran’s branches of power and outlined general policies to boost the country’s economy and lower its vulnerabilities under a grand plan, dubbed Resistance Economy.

Rouhani further touched upon his plans to control inflation and said the basis for doing so is the growth of domestic production and free competition in the internal markets.

Rouhani, 69, has been campaigning for the upcoming presidential election along with five other candidates, namely Ebrahim Raisi, Eshaq Jahangiri, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Mostafa Hashemitaba, and Mostafa Aqa-Mirsalim.

The Iranian presidential vote is scheduled to be held this Friday.

During the previous presidential election in June 2013, Hassan Rouhani garnered 50.7 percent of a total of over 36 million votes.

According to Ali Asghar Ahmadi, the head of the Interior Ministry’s State Elections Committee, a total of 56,410,234 Iranians can cast their ballots in the election this year.
