Iran’s Top General Hails Security of Border Areas in Southeastern Province
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri praised the security situation in border areas in the southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan as “acceptable” and said there is good coordination among security organizations there.
“Today, with the grace of God, there is a good and acceptable (level of) security both on the border and across the province, through endeavors made by security organizations, including the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), police, Intelligence Ministry, prosecutor's office and other organizations,” Major General Baqeri told reporters in Zahedan, the capital of Sistan and Balouchestan on Sunday.
He further emphasized that there is a full coordination among all security organizations in the province, expressing the hope that security would further develop in the region.
The commander also announced that some military units from the Pakistani army have been deployed to common borders with Iran to help boost security in the region.
In recent years, there have been sporadic incidents on Iran-Pakistan border with terrorist elements operating inside Pakistan launching cross-border attacks. But the two countries have been working to enhance security in the region.
In a latest such incident, a cross-border terrorist attack from inside Pakistan took place on April 26, in which ten Iranian servicemen were killed on duty in Mirjaveh, in Sistan and Balouchestan.
The attack on the Iranian troops was claimed by the so-called Jaish al-Adl Takfiri terrorist group.
Iran’s Police said the martyrs were killed by long-range weapons fired from Pakistani soil.
One day later on April 27, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani sent a letter to the then prime minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif, calling on Islamabad to prosecute and bring to justice the perpetrators of the attack and work to curb terrorist groups’ activities along the common border.
