Construction of 2nd, 3rd Units of Bushehr Nuclear Plant to Start Tuesday: MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The construction of the second and third units of a nuclear power plant near the Iranian southern port city of Bushehr will begin next week, the spokesman for the parliament’s Energy Commission announced.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Asadollah Qarakhani said according to the schedule, the construction of the second and third units of the Bushehr power plant will officially start in a ceremony on Tuesday.

He said the ceremony will be attended by the members of the Energy Commission and officials with the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) as well as Russian officials.

The lawmaker went on to say that currently, the Bushehr power plant is connected to the national grid.

Back in September 2016, Iran and Russia started the construction of the second unit of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in a ceremony attended by the head of the AEOI Ali Akbar Salehi, Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri, and Sergei Kiriyenko, head of Russian state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom.

The second unit is expected to take 9 years to complete (October 2024). The third unit is also going to be built near the second one.

A total of $10 billion has been allocated for the construction of the two units.
