Nigerians Mark 2nd Anniversary of Zaria Massacre (+Photos)
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Nigerians took to the streets of the capital Abuja to mark the second anniversary of the Zaria massacre in which hundreds of people were killed by the African country’s army in 2015.
Hundreds of people swarmed the streets of Abuja on Monday for the third consecutive day of protests against the Zaria massacre, the official website of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) reported.
Members of the IMN used the occasion to renew calls for the release of their leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, who lost one of his eyes in the attacks and is now under custody, according to Ibrahim Musa, spokesman for the Islamic Movement.
Except for the first day when government troops attempted to stop the processions, there was no serious inimical occurrence, he added.
"That the occasion was peacefully done over these three days…this is only a further evidence of our peaceful disposition contrary to these agents of doom,” Musa said.
The movement further said it remained undeterred in its bid to secure the freedom of Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife from illegal detention.
"We are individually and collectively resolved to keep the fire burning and shall not relent until the total freedom of Sheikh Zakzaky is achieved. We will not leave any stone unturned until our all our members also being detained for no other reason but their faith, are freed. We will not rest on our oars until those who perpetrated this heinous crime against us, are brought to book in our local courts and at the International Criminal Court at The Hague," the spokesman said.
