UN Chief Urges JCPOA Parties to Continue to Honor Their Commitments

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers “a major achievement” that “has contributed to regional and international peace and security”, urging the parties to preserve the deal after the US exit.

In a statement read out by Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the United Nations secretary-general, Guterres said he was “deeply concerned” by the US decision, AP reported.

He called on the other signatories “to abide fully” by their commitments.

In a speech from the White House on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump accused Iran of sponsoring terrorism and seeking nukes before announcing the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

Following the controversial decision, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran weighs plans to remain in the agreement with the other five parties, namely Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany, provided that the remaining JCPOA parties ensure its full benefits for Iran.
