Iran, France, UK Plan Intensive Meetings on JCPOA
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – In telephone conversations on Wednesday, the foreign ministers of Iran, France and Britain agreed on a series of intensive meetings to figure out how to keep the 2015 Iran nuclear deal running without the United States.
The British foreign secretary and France’s foreign minister held separate phone conversations with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Wednesday evening.
The three top diplomats agreed to hold intense meetings at the level of experts and ministers to weigh plans for maintaining the nuclear deal.
Boris Johnson and Jean-Yves Le Drian expressed support for efforts to save the JCPOA, saying Iran should benefit from the nuclear agreement.
Zarif, in return, underscored that the other parties to the deal should give Iran guarantees that it will be able to reap the benefits of the deal, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.
In a speech from the White House on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump accused Iran of sponsoring terrorism and seeking nukes before announcing the US withdrawal from the nuclear accord.
Following the controversial decision, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran weighs plans to remain in the agreement with the other five parties, namely Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany, provided that the remaining JCPOA parties ensure its full benefits for Iran.
In a speech on Wednesday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei urged that any decision to keep the deal running without the US should be conditional on “practical guarantees” from the three European parties to the JCPOA.
