Putin to Discuss US JCPOA Pullout with IAEA Chief in Sochi

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russian President Vladimir Putin will have a number of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) summit in Sochi on Monday to discuss a number of issues, including the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

Putin is expected to meet with newly-elected Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano, Acting Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov said, according to Tass news agency.

The Russian president’s meeting with the IAEA Director General, during which he is planned to discuss Washington’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, stands apart in a series of meetings with the EAEU leaders. The meeting will likewise be held in Sochi on May 14.

"This contact is of special importance, considering the United States’ unilateral withdrawal from the Iran deal. Everyone realizes that...," Ushakov said.

When asked whether it is planned to discuss Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the deal, the Kremlin aide said that the issue will certainly be discussed.

In a speech from the White House on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump accused Iran of sponsoring terrorism and seeking nukes before announcing the US withdrawal from the nuclear accord.

Following the controversial decision, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran weighs plans to remain in the agreement with the other five parties, namely Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany, provided that the remaining JCPOA parties ensure its full benefits for Iran.
