Daesh Militants Lay Down Arms in Syria’s Hajar al-Aswad, Yarmouk
DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – Remaining Daesh militants in southern Damascus handed over their weapons to Syrian forces on Saturday after they were offered reconciliation deals by the government.
According to Tasnim dispatches, the militants remaining in the Hajar al-Aswad area and Yarmouk were mostly comprised of Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) Takfriri terrorists.
They put down their arms on Saturday after the Syrian army inflicted major losses on them.
They were encircled by the Arab country’s forces after losing their last stronghold in Hajar al-Aswad, the report added.
The Syrian army on April 14 declared the liberation of Douma in the Eastern Ghouta countryside of Damascus, after the last pockets of militants from the so-called Jaish al-Islam group and their families left the area.
Rebels still hold large swathes of northwest and southwest Syria that are not besieged because they border Turkey and Jordan, which have at times backed the insurgents and are guarantors of limited truces in those areas.
The only other area that was surrounded by the Syrian army, in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp south of Damascus, is no longer held by Daesh terrorists.
Takfiri terrorists have lost much of the territory they once held in Syria amid sweeping gains by government forces on the ground.
In April, Syrian forces managed to retake the Eastern Ghouta and Eastern Qalamoun regions near the capital.
For years, the areas had served as a launch pad for deadly terror attacks against civilians in Damascus.
