Americans Ashamed of Their Government: President Rouhani
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani criticized the current US administration for its non-adherence to commitments and lack of respect for huma rights, saying half of Americans are ashamed of their government’s conduct.
“Before us is a person who separates a mother from her child, is against Islam and Muslims, and boasts about a wall on the US-Mexican border,” Rouhani said on Thursday addressing a meeting following the launch of the second phase of Iran’s Persian Gulf Star Refinery in the country’s southern port city of Bandar Abbas.
He added, “Today, half of Americans feel ashamed of their government and if we poll them, we will find out that they are dissatisfied with their government and the White House.”
The Iranian chief executive said that as a result of Washington’s behavior, ties between the US and some of its close allies like Mexico and the EU have been strained during Donald Trump’s presidency.
Rouhani further referred to the US enmity toward the Iranian nation and said, “They (US officials) have an old and long-standing grudge against us”.
He stressed that Iranians need to remain united in the face of the US pressure and turn the threats into opportunities.
The remarks come following sporadic protests earlier this week over the economic performance of Rouhani’s administration and foreign exchange problems.
Trump pulled his country out of the Iran nuclear deal in May and said he will re-impose sanctions against Tehran.
The agreement, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), had ended nuclear-related sanctions against Iran in exchange for certain changes to the country’s nuclear program.
