TEHRAN (Tasnim) - At least 19 people were killed in flooding after a hydroelectric dam burst in Laos' Attapeu province on Monday, with the death toll expected to grow as hundreds remain missing.
At least three thousand people in Laos are still in need of rescue, clinging to trees and sitting on rooftops, after a dam in a southeastern province burst, flooding villages and killing at least 19.
Reportedly, over 6,500 people were left homeless, as the floods swept through at least six villages in the vicinity of the dam in Attapeu province.
The local authorities and rescue teams are still dispatching boats across the Attapeu area to try to save those who have been stranded by the flash flooding. A reported 2,851 people have already been rescued.
Officials do not know the exact reason behind the bursting of the dam, which was under construction when it collapsed.
