Iran’s Military Power Only for Deterrence: IRGC Chief

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari highlighted the growing military power of the Islamic Republic and said it is meant only for deterrence and defense.

Iran’s deterrent power in the Persian Gulf waters has deterred the enemies from casting a greedy eye on the country's territorial waters, Major General Jafari said in a speech on Wednesday.

“Given the development and spread of the resistance discourse formed in the region, inspired by the (1979) Islamic Revolution, every day, our enemies become more frustrated,” he said.

"Iran’s message to the Persian Gulf littoral states is peace and friendship, and the establishment of joint cooperation to ensure security in the Persian Gulf waterway without the presence of foreign forces,” the commander added.

“Iran's military power in the region is only meant for defense and deterrence,” Major General Jafari went on to say.

Iranian officials have repeatedly underscored that the country will not hesitate to strengthen its military capabilities, including its missile power, which are entirely meant for defense, and that Iran’s defense capabilities will be never subject to negotiations.

Back in February, Ayatollah Khamenei called for efforts to maintain and boost Iran’s defense capabilities, hitting back at the enemies for disputing the country’s missile program.

“Without a moment of hesitation, the country must move to acquire whatever is necessary for defense, even if the whole world is opposed to it,” Ayatollah Khamenei said on February 18.
