Syrian Army Intensifies Attacks on ISIL in Eastern Sweida Province

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Syrian army forces have resumed attacks against ISIL (also known as Daesh) terrorist group in the Al-Safa region of Al-Sweida province since late this week.

The army troops have tightened noose around ISIL positions in eastern Sweida province and continued Fierce clashes against the terror group, using heavy artillery and rocket strikes to destroy their trenches and fortifications across the rocky cliffs surrounding Safa hilltops.

Backed by heavy airstrikes from the Russian Aerospace Forces, the Syrian Army began their operation on Thursday morning by storming the Al-Safa region from three different flanks, Al-Masdar News reported.

According to a military source in Sweida city, the Army managed to further advance in the Qasr Sheikh Hussein area after a fierce battle with the terrorists in the Al-Safa volcanic region, killing several terrorists during the battle.

Sweida, which is largely under the control of the Syrian troops, is home to the Druze minority, from which Daesh recently abducted some 30 women and children last month following a brutal attack that killed more than 250 civilians.

The province has been relatively insulated from Syria’s seven-year bloody war launched by foreign-backed militants and terror groups against Damascus.

Those attacks were the bloodiest ever seen in the province, as well as some of the deadliest launched by Daesh in the war-torn country.

Syrian troops defeated Daesh late last year and took back all the urban bastions once the terror group had under its control, but the group's remnants have been trying to regroup and have mounted a series of hit-and-run attacks.
