Iran Vehemently Rejects US Chemical Weapons Accusations as ‘Unfounded’
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi dismissed as “unfounded” the US government’s accusations that the Islamic Republic has violated the Chemical Weapons Convention.
“During the Review Conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in The Hague on Thursday, the US mission to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) once again leveled groundless accusations against the Islamic Republic, which we strongly reject,” Qassemi said in a statement early on Friday.
“Based on the procedure of the conference, the Iranian mission to the OPCW will make an appropriate response to these unfounded accusations after the end of the general debates,” he stated.
“What is certain and clear is that the US is the only OPCW member state which possesses an arsenal of chemical weapons and has not met its obligations to destroy them yet,” the spokesman noted.
“At the same time, the US backs the Zionist regime’s chemical weapons program and makes such wrong and false accusations because of its hostility towards the Iranian nation,” Qassemi said.
He went on to say that the US aims to divert the world’s public opinion from its violation of obligations and continued support for the Israeli chemical arsenals and terrorist groups.
Israel is the only possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East, but its policy is to neither confirm nor deny that it has atomic bombs. The Tel Aviv regime is estimated to have 200 to 400 nuclear warheads in its arsenal.
Unlike Iran, the Tel Aviv regime is not a member of the NPT -- whose aim is to prevent the spread of nuclear arms and weapons technology – in defiance of international pressure.
