Azerbaijan, Armenia Offer Condolences to Iran over Deadly Floods

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The president of Azerbaijan and prime minister of Armenia expressed condolences and offered assistance to Iran over floods in the country that took at least 21 lives over the past few days.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev expressed condolences to his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in a message, according to Azeri media.

“I was deeply saddened by the news of heavy casualties and destruction as a result of a natural disaster that hit your country,” the message said, adding “On the occasion of this tragedy, on my own behalf and on behalf of the people of Azerbaijan, I extend my deepest condolences to you, families and loved ones of those who died and all of the people of Iran, and wish those injured the swiftest possible recovery.”

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan also expressed his country’s readiness to assist Iran by supplying urgent needs to flood-hit areas across the country.

“The news of devastating flooding in Iran which claimed the lives of dozens of people has put me in shock. I was deeply shocked by the news of a severe flooding in Iran which claimed the lives of dozens of people,” the Armenian premier tweeted on Tuesday, adding, “At this difficult moment, Armenia is ready to stand aside and support the friendly people of Iran and provide the necessary assistance to overcome the consequences of the disaster.”

Heavy rain caused a sudden flash flood in northern provinces of Mazandaran and Golestan last week. Iran’s western and southern province of Lorestan and Fars were also hit by flooding on Monday that left at least 21 people dead.
