AFC U-19 Women's Championship Qualifications: Iran Narrowly Denied

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran failed to qualify for the AFC U-19 Women's Championship Thailand 2019 Finals, despite its 5-1 win against Lebanon on Tuesday.

Vietnam lost to South Korea 2-1 but qualified for the competition ahead of Iran by virtue of its lower fair play points.

Iran had kept its hopes of a place in the Finals alive, defeating Lebanon 5-1 in their final Group B match.

Final day wins for Australia and Myanmar ensured the duo qualified as winner and runner-up from the Mandalay-based Group A, while Vietnam joined already-qualified Korea Republic in a memorable Matchday Three in Hanoi.

Tuesday's matches brought to an end a qualifying process which began with a field of 24 teams last October, with four successful teams emerging following two highly competitive stages.

Those four qualifiers will join host nation Thailand, as well as Japan, DPR Korea and China PR - the top three sides at the previous edition of the tournament in 2017 - to compete for the title of Asian champions starting from October 27.

All eyes now turn to the competition's official draw on May 23, where Asia's stars of the future will discover their AFC U-19 Women's Championship Thailand 2019 group stage opponents.

The final will be held on November 9, with the competition to also decide Asia's representatives at the 2020 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.
