Iran Attaches Great Importance to Ties with Armenia: President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the country considers its ties with Armenia as very important, adding that Tehran and Yerevan are seeking to activate their “extensive economic capacities” for cooperation in different fields, including energy and transportation.

The Islamic Republic of Iran attaches great importance to its ties with Armenia as its old friend and neighbor, Rouhani said in a meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held on the sidelines of the summit of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in Armenia’s capital Yerevan on Tuesday.

“We are ready to boost Tehran-Yerevan ties in different fields, especially economy and trade,” the Iranian president said.

“Tehran and Yerevan can develop their mutual cooperation in different fields, especially energy, hydroelectric power plants, wind farms, solar power stations, transportation, communications, modern technologies, pharmaceuticals and technical and engineering services.”

The two countries have great capacities to enhance their bilateral and regional cooperation, he said, adding, “Cooperation in the North-South Corridor and linking the Black Sea to the Persian Gulf will be beneficial to both nations and can boost Tehran-Yerevan relations".

Pashinyan, for his part, said, “We are determined to increase our relations and cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

“Trade cooperation in border areas with Iran is very important for Armenia and we are looking for ways to enhance this cooperation," he added.

The Armenian prime minister further described Iran as a “sustainable source of energy and natural gas” for his country, saying Yerevan wanted to extend its gas for electricity barter agreement with Iran until 2040.
