Concern about Saudi Nuclear Program Mooted at IAEA Meeting: Iran’s Envoy
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors has for the first time discussed concerns about Saudi Arabia’s nuclear activities after Iran proposed the subject, Iranian permanent representative to Vienna-based international organizations said.
In remarks on Sunday, Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran has tried to attract global attention at the IAEA Board of Governors meeting to the Safeguards concerns over Saudi Arabia’s nuclear activities.
The issue of Saudi nuclear activities was widely covered by different world media, he noted.
There were many questions on the first day of the meeting from reporters about the IAEA’s plans for supervising the Saudi nuclear activities, the Iranian ambassador added, IRNA reported.
He said there were more than 50 speeches delivered by representatives of the member states about the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
Except for the statements by the United States, the Zionist regime and one or two Arab countries, the majority of other statements stressed the need to maintain the hard-won multilateral nuclear accord with Iran, Garibabadi added.
The participants criticized the US’ unilateral withdrawal from JCPOA, the ambassador stressed.
He also hailed a professional report by the IAEA director-general following a visit to Tehran and a meeting with the head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), saying the report was based on the agreements struck before.
The Iranian ambassador noted that the nuclear activities of the Zionist regime were also discussed in the meeting where the member states called for adoption of the Agency’s Safeguards Agreement and making the Middle East free from nuclear arms.
