Protesters Clash with Police during Tribute to Victim of Police Violence in Chile (+Video)
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Police used water cannons on protesters amid skirmishes during a commemorative tribute gathering to a victim of police violence in Santiago, Chile on Monday.
Protesters had gathered near where Mauricio Fredes died after being pursued by police during the 'social outbreak' wave of protests in 2019, a movement that is still ongoing.
Fredes died at the age of 33 on December 27 2019, when he fell head first into a water-filled pit containing electrical cables as he was attempting to escape from a pursuing police vehicle during a protest.
As a result of the protests, Chile voted for a new constitution in a referendum in October, which saw an approval rate of 78 percent.
