Iran Rejects Report on Arrest of Istanbul Consulate Staffer

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry dismissed as “baseless” the report by a Turkish newspaper that a staff member of the Iranian Consulate in Istanbul has been arrested.

In a statement on Thursday evening, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said the story published by the Turkish newspaper about the arrest of a staff member of the Iranian Consulate in Istanbul is “totally groundless and founded on baseless allegations.”

“None of the staffers of our country’s Consulate General in Istanbul has been or is engaged, closely or remotely, in the activities alleged by that (Turkish) media. Moreover, none of the employees of our country’s Consulate General has been arrested,” Khatibzadeh underlined.

The spokesman stressed that the individual cited in the Turkish report is not a staff member of the Iranian Consulate General in Istanbul.

He also noted that Iran’s Foreign Ministry is in contact with the Turkish authorities through official channels to shed light on the issue.

His comments came after Turkey’s Sabah newspaper claimed that a staff member of the Iranian Consulate in Istanbul has been arrested for helping the mastermind of the murder of a dissident in Istanbul back in 2019.
