MPs Stand Firm on Strategic Action As UN Nuclear Chief Visits Tehran
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – While the IAEA director general is in Tehran for talks about Iran’s decision to stop the voluntary implementation of the Additional Protocol, Iranian lawmakers insisted that the act on reduced commitments to the JCPOA must come into force according to the deadline.
The UN nuclear watchdog’s director general, Rafael Grossi, arrived in Tehran on Saturday night to discuss how to work with Iran in light of its plan to halt the voluntary implementation of the Additional Protocol of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as of February 23.
The IAEA chief on Sunday held a meeting with Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi for what Iranian officials described as “technical discussions on how to continue cooperation in the light of new arrangements and development.”
Meanwhile, 226 Iranian lawmakers in a statement on Sunday insisted that the ‘Strategic Action’ on lifting sanctions and safeguarding national interests, ratified in October 2020, should be carried out according to the deadline of February 23, because the European signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal have failed to honor their commitments.
The MPs also underlined that a possible US return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action would take place only after the full, practical and verifiable termination of the banking and oil sanctions against the Iranian nation.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Saturday that Tehran’s decision about the Additional Protocol does not translate into withdrawal from the JCPOA, noting that Iran’s measures are reversible.
