JCPOA Session in Vienna to Hash Out US Sanctions Removal: Iranian Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The main item on the agenda at the upcoming meeting of the JCPOA Joint Commission in Austria will be the lifting of the US sanctions on Tehran, the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson said.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Saeed Khatibzadeh said the agenda of the April 6 meeting of the JCPOA Joint Commission in Vienna will be the lifting of the cruel US sanctions, or how the other parties should honor their commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal.

He also emphasized that Iran would not accept any step-by-step plan for the removal of the sanctions.

Tehran would welcome the US plan to rectify the past policies and return to the correct path, he noted.

The road is clear, and it is the full removal of the US sanctions on Iran, the spokesman underlined, noting that the representatives of Iran and the Group 4+1 will be holding technical and legal negotiations.

The Iranian delegation in tomorrow’s meeting will be chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, he stated.

Following the 18th meeting of the JCPOA Joint Commission that was held via videoconference on Friday, the participants decided to proceed with the talks in Vienna next week to continue the consultations and define the measures relating to the termination of US sanctions.

The JCPOA was signed in 2015 between Iran and the Group 5+1 and endorsed by the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

However, then-US president Donald Trump unilaterally pulled Washington out of the nuclear deal in May 2018 and reinstated the anti-Iranian sanctions that had been lifted by the deal.

As the remaining European parties have failed to fulfill their commitments to the accord and compensate for Washington’s absence, Iran moved in May 2019 to scale back its JCPOA commitments.
