Iran’s President Rules Out JCPOA+
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani made it clear that the talks for reviving the JCPOA must result in the implementation of the exact deal signed in 2015, not anything else.
Speaking at a weekly cabinet session on Wednesday, Rouhani emphasized that what Tehran has been pursuing in the most recent round of talks for the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is “the exact implementation of the JCPOA, not a word less, not a word more.”
“We don’t want a JCPOA plus,” he underlined.
It is clear that the only way to settle the standoff is to carry out the nuclear agreement in full, Rouhani noted, adding that such a procedure would have three stages.
“The first stage is the complete removal of (anti-Iran) sanctions, an onus on the US, which has imposed such sanctions. Of course, the others should also help, as every sanction imposed on various pretexts and with new labels must be terminated,” he stated.
“The second step is verification, which will take place after the removal of the sanctions. The third step would be the return to the JCPOA commitments, which we will carry out,” the president added.
The latest round of JCPOA talks began in Vienna on April 6 between Iran and the remaining members of the nuclear deal, namely the UK, France, Russia and China plus Germany.
The US left the JCPOA in 2018 and restored the economic sanctions that the accord had lifted. Tehran retaliated with remedial nuclear measures that it is entitled to take under the JCPOA’s Paragraph 36.
The current negotiations examine the potential of revitalization of the nuclear deal and the US’ likely return to it.
