Outstanding Issues Need to Be Finalized in JCPOA Talks: Araqchi

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s top negotiator in the latest round of talks on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal pointed to the outstanding issues about which the parties should make decisions in order to hammer out a deal.

Speaking to reporters at the conclusion of the fifth round of the JCPOA negotiations in Vienna on Tuesday, Abbas Araqchi said the important subjects include the outstanding issues that must be finalized and the decisions that must be made to reach an agreement.

While many delegations are hopeful that this will be the final round of negotiations and a conclusion can be at hand, it is necessary to be cautious, he added.

“We are looking for an agreement that fulfills our demands,” Araqchi underlined.

In a separate interview with Press TV, the Iranian deputy foreign minister said, “In the last round, we were able to make some meaningful progress in our negotiations but still there are some key issues to be resolved.”

“I cannot say that we are able to conclude our job in this round of negotiations but this is possible; it depends on how much we are able to make progress on key issues and how much the other parties are prepared to make their own difficult decisions,” he said.

The most recent round of JCPOA negotiations that have begun on April 6 examine the potential of revitalization of the nuclear deal and the US’ likely return to it.

The US left the JCPOA in 2018 and restored the economic sanctions that the accord had lifted. Tehran retaliated with remedial nuclear measures that it is entitled to take under the JCPOA’s Paragraph 36.

On Friday, the JCPOA parties agreed to proceed with and speed up the intensive negotiations by holding several meetings at various levels on a daily basis.
