Indian Foreign Minister to Relay Message to Iran’s President-Elect
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – In a rare political move, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi is sending a written message via his foreign minister to Iranian President-elect Ebrahim Raeisi, who has not formally taken office yet.
Minister of External Affairs of India Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is going to meet with Raeisi during a layover in Tehran on Wednesday evening.
Jaishankar, who will stay in Tehran for a couple of hours before flying to Moscow, is expected to relay the written message from the Indian prime minister in the meeting with the winner of Iran’s recent presidential election.
Raeisi, the former Judiciary Chief of Iran, won the June 18 presidential election by garnering over 62 percent of the votes. He will be sworn in as the 8th president of Iran at a ceremony in the Parliament on August 3.
After the layover in Tehran, the senior Indian diplomat will visit Russia for talks on the latest developments in Afghanistan.
Jaishankar will reportedly hold a bilateral meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov to cement ties as well as prepare for President Vladimir Putin’s forthcoming visit to India.
