Third Shipment of COVAX COVID-19 Vaccines Arrives in Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Some 1.45 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine have been delivered to Iran as part of its purchase of millions of doses through the COVAX initiative.

The Islamic Republic of Iran, as one of the self-financing participant countries of the COVAX Facility, has received the third batch of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine with 1,449,600 doses.

The COVAX Facility is a partnership, co-led by Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi-The Vaccine Alliance and the World Health Organization (WHO), alongside key delivery partner United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

The consignment is the third COVAX shipment to the country, with future consignments of the approved allocation of COVID vaccines to be delivered very soon, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Medical Education of the Islamic Republic of Iran, through UNICEF procurement channel.

The AstraZeneca vaccines for Iran landed at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport on Thursday and were received by representatives of the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, in presence of the UNICEF and WHO technical teams.

On Tuesday, the health ministry said the number of people who have received the first jab of vaccine for the coronavirus in Iran has surpassed 19 million, with over 9 million having gotten both doses.
