Iranian, Italian Diplomats Discuss Efforts to Resolve Syria Crisis
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior adviser to the Iranian foreign minister for special political affairs and Italy’s special envoy for Syria held a meeting in Switzerland to weigh political plans for the settlement of crisis in Syria and provide humanitarian aid for the Syrian people.
Iranian diplomat Ali Asghar Khaji and Italian special envoy for Syria Stephen Ravanan met on the sidelines of the meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva on Tuesday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry reported.
In the gathering, Ravanan stressed the importance of Iran's regional role, especially in Syria.
He noted that the Italian government is involved in the fight against terrorism and pursues a political solution to the Syrian crisis.
The envoy also said Italy seeks to provide humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people through the European Union and the United Nations.
For his part, Khaji said the Syrian people are basically in need of humanitarian aid, called for the return of refugees to their country and the eradication of terrorism in Syria, and stressing that tranquility in the Arab country will lead to stabilization of the region.
The Iranian adviser also warned that the continuation of the US and European sanctions will not help resolve the Syrian crisis.
The Iranian and Italian diplomats agreed to continue their consultations in the future on helping settle the Syrian crisis.
