Iran, Azerbaijan Move to Broaden Ties after Settling Misunderstandings

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign ministers of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan agreed on plans to expand relations between the two neighbors, denouncing the unfriendly attempts that sought to take advantage of a series of misunderstandings.

In a telephone conversation with his Azeri counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian highlighted the close and brotherly relations between Tehran and Baku.

He said the Iranian and Azeri authorities managed to clear up the misunderstandings that arose in the recent months against the will of the parties disfavoring amicable relations between the two neighbors.

“Now we in both countries can move towards the expansion of mutual cooperation,” Amirabdollahian noted.

He also expressed Iran’s strong support for the regional formats, such as the 3+3 format, stressing that the regional problems could be resolved through intra-regional mechanisms.

For his part, Bayramov said the outsiders should not be allowed to abuse the misunderstandings between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Iran, which he said must be cleared up in a friendly and brotherly atmosphere.

He also voiced Baku’s readiness to enhance relations with Tehran in all fields.

The two senior diplomats also talked about the mutual trade ties and the appointment of an Iranian head for the Joint Economic Commission of the two nations.
