Iran to Insist on Necessary Guarantees in Vienna Talks: Spokesman
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Since the US has already breached the international commitments and its president’s signature is unreliable, Iran will in the next round of nuclear talks look for the necessary guarantees and insist on the effective and verifiable removal of sanctions all at once, a spokesman said.
Speaking to IRIB on Friday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said the condition for the US to rejoin the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is that Washington should remove the sanctions effectively, all at once, and in a verifiable manner.
“The US president’s signature is not reliable,” he added, noting that the termination of sanctions will be Iran’s main purpose in the upcoming negotiations.
The United States, including its current administration, has proved that it cannot honor commitments, Khatibzadeh stated, saying Iran and the team of negotiators will naturally insist on the necessary guarantees in the talks.
He added that if the US is prepared to lift the sanctions verifiably and all at once, an agreement will be achievable in the shortest time possible.
The US re-introduced the sanctions against Iran in 2018 after leaving the JCPOA, a historic nuclear agreement that had lifted the inhumane economic bans in return for some voluntary restrictions on Iran’s peaceful nuclear energy program.
Following a year of strategic patience, Iran resorted to its legal rights stipulated in Article 26 of the JCPOA, which grants a party the right to suspend its contractual commitments in case of non-compliance by other signatories and let go of some of the restrictions imposed on its nuclear energy program.
Iran and the remaining parties to the JCPOA have held six rounds of talks in Vienna, which began after the US administration of Joe Biden voiced a willingness to rejoin the nuclear agreement, to examine the prospect of the bans’ fresh removal.
