Vienna Talks to Continue after Brief Hiatus: Iranian Negotiator
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s top negotiator in the Vienna talks on the revival of the JCPOA hailed the “good progress” made in the past recent days, saying the parties will proceed with the talks after a break of a few days.
In a post on his Twitter account on Friday, Ali Baqeri said that following his consultations with other delegations in Vienna, he has held a meeting with Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service for Political Affairs Enrique Mora on Thursday “to take stock of the situation & discuss the way forward.”
“We have made good progress this week. We will convene a Joint Commission today & will continue talks after a break of a few days,” Baqeri added.
The JCPOA was abandoned by former US president Donald Trump in May 2018. Trump then targeted Iran’s economy with what he called a “maximum pressure” campaign, which failed to compel Iran to negotiate a “new deal.”
Iran and the five remaining parties to the JCPOA -- Germany, Britain, France, Russia and China -- began the talks in the Austrian capital in April with the aim of removing the sanctions after the US, under President Joe Biden, voiced its willingness to return to the agreement.
