Iranian Council Discusses Strategies to Organize Border Trade, Combat Smuggling

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Supreme Council of Economic Coordination held a meeting to discuss strategies and measures to organize trade in the country’s border areas and combat smuggling.

In the meeting of the Supreme Council of Economic Coordination, which was held on Saturday night with the presence of the heads of the three branches of power and other members, under the chairmanship of President Ebrahim Raisi, strategies for organizing border trade and combating smuggling and other methods of illegal movement of goods in border areas were discussed.

In this meeting, the proposal of the headquarters to fight against the smuggling of goods and currency with three axes of "transparency and legalization of border trade", "creating the necessary infrastructure for the development of legal trade at the borders" and "creating employment with the aim of providing a suitable life for the residents of the border areas" were proposed and approved, the website of the president’s office reported.

This proposal was approved by the Supreme Council of Economic Coordination with the aim of increasing the governance of the government and organizing illegal porting and dealing with the harmful social, human and economic effects of illegal methods of moving goods across the borders.

Emphasizing the necessity of making border trade healthy and supporting legal activities and dealing with the damage and social and economic consequences of incorrect methods of moving goods, the President said, "Providing livelihood and job creation for border residents who have always been protectors of the Islamic Republic of Iran is the priority of all institutions, including the government, therefore any decision in this field should support the stable and healthy livelihood of the border dwellers and lead to the organization and discipline of border trade".

In this meeting, the issue of dealing with the situation of the Haft Tappeh sugarcane production complex was also put on the agenda. Considering the positive and constructive effects of the government's temporary decisions and measures last year to organize and improve the functioning of this complex, the members decided to adopt the necessary measures, including making the regulations permanent, in order to continue the productive activity, ensure the interests of the workers and determine the ownership status of Haft Tappeh sugarcane production complex.
