Iran Greco-Roman Team Claims Title at U-20 World Wrestling


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Greco-Roman team won the title of the U-20 World Wrestling Championships.

In the final day of the competitions, the Iranian wrestlers bagged three gold and two bronze medals.

Saeid Esmaeili emerged victorious over Armenian grappler Suren Aghajanyan in the final match of the 63kg.

Alireza Mohammadi Piani pummeled Georgian Achiko Bolkvadze 9-1 in the 82kg final bout.

“Bolkvadze is a good wrestler and he won a gold medal last year at U17," Mohmadip Piani said. “I won the Asian Championships. So great bout but I won against him at the end."

"The weight class has many good wrestlers. We have Azerbaijan (Rafig Huseynov) and Turkey (Burhan Akbudak) but I'm well trained and I think I can win,” he added.

And Ali Abedi Darzi won the 97kg weight class by beating Kazakhstan’s Iussuf Matsiyev 9-4 in the final.

Danial Sohrabi (67kg) and Amir Abdi (72kg) also collected two bronze medals.

Iran’s Greco-Roman team claimed the title with 174 points. Azerbaijan came second with 119 points while Ukraine finished third with 93 points.

The 45th World U-20 Wrestling Championships was held in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Over 600 talented wrestlers competed in the Championships.

The competition contained three categories namely Men’s freestyle, Greco-Roman, and Women’s wrestling.
