Envoy Summoned over Germany’s Push for UNHRC Meeting on Iran
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Germany’s ambassador to Tehran was called to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in protest at Berlin’s move to organize a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council against Iran and at the German officials’ baseless and interfering comments.
Hans-Udo Muzel was summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Monday after his country initiated a special session of the UNHRC about the recent developments in Iran and following the “repetition of interfering and groundless” remarks from the German authorities, the ministry’s website reported.
The envoy was informed about Iran’s strong protest against the German officials’ baseless comments and was told that “the recent resolution in the special session of the UN Human Rights Council is a wrong step on the basis of a completely political and instrumental approach towards human rights.”
The Islamic Republic of Iran will not cooperate with any mechanism defined on the basis of that resolution, the ambassador was told in the meeting.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also noted that Germany and the other European countries’ conformity to the US’ unilateral sanctions, which have blatantly violated the human rights of Iranian people, indicate that they lack the competence to raise human rights-related claims.
The German envoy said he would convey Iran’s protest to his government.
The UNHRC voted on Thursday to condemn what it called a “crackdown on peaceful protests” in Iran and create an independent fact-finding mission to investigate alleged abuses.
The resolution initiated by Germany and Iceland was backed by 25 countries, including the US and many European nations.
