Iran Censures US’ Contradictory Manner in JCPOA Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Reiterating the availability of opportunity for an eventual agreement in the talks on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry denounced Washington’s paradoxical approach in the course of negotiations.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Monday, Nasser Kanaani said there is still the chance of striking an ultimate agreement in the talks for saving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the window of opportunity for a deal is open from the viewpoint of Iran.

“But unfortunately the US’ attitude is contradictory and paradoxical. Their stances are negative, while their behavior and messages, sent via intermediaries, are something else,” the spokesman said.

He noted that a recent regional summit about Iraq, held in Jordan, provided a good opportunity for a fresh round of talks between Iran and the EU’s lead negotiator, the conclusion of which was that the “path to the final steps” should continue to be taken.

The text of a proposed agreement, which the top EU negotiator has submitted to Iran and the US, is prepared for conclusion, Kanaani stated, adding, “It was the American side’s procrastination that missed the opportunity; once for the sake of the (US) midterm election and once more under other pretexts such as the domestic developments in Iran and other issues like Ukraine.”

The Iranian spokesperson also said that the American negotiators have not attended the talks to reach a conclusion, although a final deal is ready to be signed by the parties.

Since April 2021, several rounds of talks between Iran and the five remaining parties to the JCPOA -Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia- have been held in the Austrian capital to bring the US back into the Iran deal.

The Vienna talks, however, exclude American diplomats due to their country’s withdrawal from the deal.
