Security Forces Dismantle MKO-Affiliated Operative Cell in Northern Iran
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian security forces successfully dismantled an operative cell associated with the Mujahedin-e-Khalq Organization (MKO) terrorist group in northern Iran.
The members of the cell had planned to carry out operations in "sensitive" sites in the city of Amol, Mazandaran province, according to a regional commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Colonel Abedin Daghmechi.
The group had been in contact with MKO-affiliated media to create inflammatory content and make calls to action as part of a broader campaign to fuel recent riots in Iran.
The terrorists were also found to have made explosives to engage in acts of sabotage and destroy public and private properties.
The MKO has been responsible for the deaths of over 17,000 Iranians since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Despite being delisted as a terrorist organization by the European Union and the United States in 2009 and 2012, respectively, the group is still considered a terrorist organization in Iran. The group is currently based in Albania, where it operates freely.
