Erbil Governorate in Northern Iraq Plans New Border Crossing with Iran to Boost Trade
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The governor general of Erbil Governorate in northern Iraq, Omed Abdulrahman Hassan, known as Omed Khoshnaw, announced the province's readiness to open a new border crossing with Iran's city of Oshnavieh in order to enhance trade between the two countries.
The announcement was made by Omed Khoshnaw during a meeting held in Urmia, the capital of Iran's West Azarbaijan province on Thursday.
The meeting brought together governors general from Iranian and Iraqi provinces located on the border between the two countries, along with Iran's Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi and top officials from Iraq's Kurdistan region. The meeting was set to conclude on Friday.
Omed Khoshnaw urged the Iranian interior minister to facilitate the opening of the border crossing in Oshnavieh, emphasizing that it would promote bilateral trade cooperation and create significant economic opportunities for communities on both sides of the border.
As the governor general of Erbil Governorate, which houses the capital and most populous city of Iraq's Kurdistan region, Omed Khoshnaw highlighted the strong bonds between the northern Iraqi region and Iran.
He noted that relations between Kurdistan and Iranian border provinces have seen notable progress in various areas such as trade, economics, politics, culture, and social ties over the past year.
Expressing a welcoming stance towards joint ventures with Iran and the presence of major Iranian companies in Iraq's Kurdistan region, Omed Khoshnaw stressed that fostering economic exchanges would benefit both sides.
He also called for the resumption of flights between Erbil and Urmia as a means to further strengthen economic ties between the regions.
