Efforts Underway for Reopening of Azeri Embassy in Tehran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan are pushing to de-escalate tensions and pave the way for the reopening of the Azeri embassy in Tehran, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said.

In comments at a presser on Monday, Kanaani said the foreign ministers of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan have held four rounds of talks in recent weeks to mend the strained relations between the two neighbors following a January fatal attack on the embassy of Azerbaijan in Tehran.

He said the two senior diplomats have agreed on measures to manage the tensions and clear up misunderstandings with a series of steps, such as the exchange of technical delegations.

The spokesman said the fourth round of ministerial negotiations was held after reciprocal visits by the two countries’ delegations, unveiling plans for the exchange of more teams.

“We are currently in the stage of negotiations to move from the phase of tension to a new phase on the reopening of Azerbaijan’s embassy in Tehran,” Kanaani stated.

An armed attack on the embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan killed a staff member and injured two others on January 27.

The Baku government shut down its embassy in Tehran afterwards.
