Iran Urges Restraint, Political Calm in Azerbaijan Embassy Attack Case

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry stressed the need to exercise self-restraint, maintain political tranquility, and refrain from hasty moves following a recent attack on the embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Tehran.

Speaking to reporters at a weekly presser on Monday, Nasser Kanaani said investigations have proved “personal motives” behind the armed attack on the embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan that killed a staff member and injured two others on January 27.

While the Iranian president and foreign minister have held telephone conversations with their Azeri counterparts and Tehran has taken the necessary measures to ease the tensions, the Republic of Azerbaijan’s officials have sadly decided to suspend the activities of their embassy in Tehran, he added.

Iran stresses the need to exercise self-restraint, keep political calm and avoid impulsiveness in the case, Kanaani stated, adding that Iran has fulfilled all of its legal duties in this regard and will continue to do so.

“We will pursue the subject within this principled framework and hope that the relations between the two countries would be no more affected by that incident,” he said.

Commenting on the Republic of Azerbaijan’s decision to close its embassy in Tehran, the spokesman said, “The basis of Iran’s stance is the expansion of relations with the countries which are committed to the reciprocal path, and neighbors have a special position.”

He called for efforts to settle the issue and clear up the misunderstanding with mutual cooperation.
