Iran Has So Far Joined 33 Int’l Maritime Conventions, Says PMO

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Islamic Republic of Iran has thus far joined 33 international maritime conventions, the chief executive of the Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) said on Tuesday.

In his message on the occasion of World Maritime Day (WMD), Ali Akbar Safaei wrote, “With their powerful and strong presence in sea and ocean and guiding regional and ocean-going commercial ships, sailors have an undeniable contribution in providing food and protecting the economic and military security of a country. These industrious sailors spare no efforts to fulfill their duties in very difficult conditions even during international crises.”

Due to the unique and unparalleled role of seafarers in the safety, security and preservation of the marine environment, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), in tandem with the increase in activities at sea, has emphasized the effective participation of seafarers in the protection of the marine environment in line with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), he added.

As a sovereign authority of the country, the Ports and Maritime Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran is proud to announce that it has always taken giant strides to protect the health of the maritime environment and emphasized the prevention of marine pollution by observing and monitoring legal requirements, he added.

In conclusion, the deputy roads minister noted that Iran has so far joined 33 international maritime conventions.
