Iran, OIC Urge Firm Response to Acts of Sacrilege
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign minister of Iran and the secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) stressed the need for concerted and decisive action by Muslim nations to prevent the recurrence of sacrilegious moves after the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian held a telephone conversation with OIC Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha on Friday night to discuss the new insult to the Holy Quran in Sweden.
Amirabdollahian expressed deep regret over the insulting and provocative move and condemned it. He proposed that an urgent ministerial meeting of the OIC be held at the earliest for the exchanges of views on the significant issue, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.
“If the Swedish government does not take an effective measure immediately, Muslim countries should concertedly give a firm response to the desecration of the divine scripture, the Holy Quran,” he added.
For his part, Brahim Taha condemned the sacrilegious move and offered a report on the contacts made and the measures taken in this regard. He promised to put a ministerial OIC meeting on agenda in consultation with the member states.
The two sides also emphasized the need for Muslim countries to take a concerted and firm measure in order to prevent a repetition of such insults.
The two officials talked a day after a Sweden-based Iraqi refugee desecrated the Muslim holy book during a demonstration outside the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm amid strict protection provided by the Swedish police.
The appalling act has opened the floodgates of protest across the Muslim community worldwide.
