Iran Sympathizes with Iraq over Tragic Wedding Fire in Nineveh

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson offered condolences to Iraq over the fatalities and injuries in a massive fire that turned a wedding ceremony into a tragedy in Nineveh on Tuesday night.

Nasser Kanaani on Wednesday expressed his condolences to the “brotherly and friendly” government and nation of Iraq and to the bereaved families of victims of the fire.

He also voiced the Iranian health and medical sector’s readiness to help treat the people injured in the incident.

At least 113 people were killed and more than 150 were injured when a fire broke out during a wedding at an event hall in the northern Iraqi town of Hamdaniyah on Tuesday night.

The hall was built using prefabricated panels, civil defense authorities said in a statement, adding that they were “highly flammable and contravened safety standards”.

Safety standards in Iraq’s construction and transport sectors are often disregarded, and the country, whose infrastructure is in disrepair after decades of conflict, is regularly the scene of fatal fires and accidents.
